That concludes today's post, on behalf of the team here at one2one thank you for joining us.
There are so many things that effect the way in which we express ourselves in English as a second language; the speed of speech, intonation and grammatical awareness are just a few. So first of all, let’s look at the speed of speech.
It’s a fact that Japanese and Spanish are known as the fastest languages. The slowest language is Mandarin followed closely by German. The point being that no two languages are spoken at the same speed. I know what your thinking, do I speak too fast? This could be true, chances are that your speed of speech is something that has to be practiced and set.
Now, pronunciation will improve if you can control your speed. It’s really unrealistic that your end goal should be to speak like a native speaker. Every accent has unique traits or characteristics. From my perspective as a teacher, it’s these characteristics that should be kept and maintained not ignored.
This podcast has been designed to help you to understand more about the type of sentences we use to express an opinion, thought, concept or idea. Let’s start with your opinion. So when you are faced with both formal and informal scenarios, work or socially, we can use the following to express your own personal opinion. This comes directly from you and is not influenced by anyone else.
To help explain, I will use the example that you think that coffee is too expensive:
I think that coffee is too expensive
I feel that coffee is too expensive
In my opinion, coffee is too expensive
As far as I am concerned, coffee is too expensive
In my view, coffee is too expensive.
Since so much of what we do everyday at work depends on opinion and so much of how we interact with people outside of work depends on opinion, learning these formats can only be an advantage. Our conversation classes depend on your ability to provide an opinion. So, there are occasions when we need to provide a much stronger opinion. Usually this opinion is supported by a voice tone that gives some emotional value.
This emotional value is also known as empathetic value and helps people to understand how passionate you are about what you are saying. So what types of sentences are used to provide strong opinion? Again I will use the price of coffee as an example.
I’m absolutely convinced that coffee is too expensive
I’m sure that coffee is too expensive
I strongly believe that coffee is too expensive
I have no doubt that coffee is too expensive
There is no doubt in my mind that coffee is too expensive
It’s important to note that interaction is based on your ability to ask questions. With opinions, we should always try to obtain someone else's perspective. So when we requesting an opinion we can use:
What do you think about the price of coffee?
What’s your view on the price of coffee?
How do you see the situation on the price of coffee?
What’s your opinion about the price of coffee?
Beliefs form the basis of an opinion and you need to be able to present belief in the correct way. I am going to use the example of education.
I believe in the importance of education
I’m a firm believer in education
There are times when we don’t want to talk at all, maybe your busy at work or your not in the mood. Here we can use:
I’m not really comfortable talking about that
I would rather not discuss that
I would rather not discuss this
I’m not sure that it’s the right time to discuss that
Finally there is the opinion of many which is the most common form of expression, here we can use the following;
Most people think that coffee is expensive
The vast majority of people think that coffee is expensive
In general people think that coffee is expensive
A lot of people think that coffee is expensive
