Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Mandi and I am a specialist IELTS tutor who has had the privilege of helping move professionals from non-English speaking countries to English-speaking countries, such as Canada, New Zealand and Australia. With over six years, specialist experience and helping over 280 people pass their IELTS exams, I would like to take the opportunity to share with you exactly how this exam process works and what you need to do to get the results you want.
Firstly, I think a lot of people underestimate the use of the IELTS exam - it is important to know that this exam is not something to take lightly - it is tough, it is hard to get a high grade, but really, so it should be!
According to the official IELTS website (ielts.org);
"IELTS is trusted by over 9,000 organisations, including universities, professional bodies, employers and migration authorities.
It is the world´s most popular English language test for higher education and global migration, with over 270 million tests taken law year in 140 countries".
In my experience, students come to me to prepare for the IELTS for two main reasons - migration and study. IELTS is currently accepted for studying, working and migration in Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the UK - as well as working and studying in the USA.
There are different grade requirements for different visas and different programs - the first thing you need to know is what MINIMUM grade is required. IELTS is graded on a 1-9 scale, 1 being no level of English and 9 being almost fluent. The average grade is an overall 5.5 which shows a working proficiency in English.
Once you know your requirements, you need to understand your capabilities. The IELTS is broken into 4 different sections: listening, reading, writing and speaking.
Each section is graded individually and an overall score is awarded - be sure you know what your individual and overall score requirements are.
My recommendation is very simple - understand your level of English before you start to commit to taking any exam. You have to think about the time it will take you to prepare yourself, there is no "average time". Some students will be ready in a matter of weeks and others can take up to a year. If you have a basic level of English but need to achieve an overall level 7, you should probably allow yourself at least 8 - 12 months to prepare. You have also to consider your environment, if you are working 7 days a week and barely have time to eat, then you are going to struggle to study - if you have some time off and can commit to studying every day, then it is going to be quicker. The key here is simply to be true to yourself, do not overcommit.
Understanding how the exam is put together is not so complicated. As I said earlier, there are 4 sections - listening, reading, writing and speaking. Study each section, learn to understand each area - consider what type of questions will be asked and what type of answers are required.
I have helped many people achieve their goals and many of my students now live in English speaking countries, working and living as part of the local community. If you want to get the results you need, get in touch today and let me help you through this difficult, but achievable challenge.
